Two Dupont Circle spots worth a mention:
Veritas, a low key wine bar where I met my friend Scott and his girlfriend Laura, two very knowledgeable people when it comes to the DC food scene.
We knocked back a couple glasses of wine, chatted a lot about food and shared this charcuterie of bresaola (air-cured beef) and prosciutto.
And a trio of dips: hummus, red pepper-feta and cucumber-yogurt.
And yes, everything tasted as good as it sounds.
After that, it was off to Panas for an empanada snack.
For dessert, Laura recommended a stop at Dolcezza for a taste of their gelato. Didn’t exactly have to twist my arm on that one.
* A side note about gelato and ice cream: I have strict personal rules about sampling on those itty bitty spoons. One, two samples tops. Anything more and I’d feel guilty, like I’m stealing from the store or holding up the line. And people who over-sample make me nuts. The “sample abuser” phenomenon was beautifully depicted in “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” You’ve gotta love Larry’s character; he’s thinking what the rest of us are thinking, only he’s got the balls to say something about it.
Anyway, back to the gelato. Upon recommendation from an employee, I settled on two scoops — one dark chocolate, and the other, after a sample (just one), sea salt.
Admittedly, sea salt sounds odd and not all that appealing, but the combo of sweet, salty and creamy just works. I couldn’t believe how perfect it was, especially paired with the chocolate. I don’t know if sea salt is a regular on the menu or an occasional flavor, but try it if you have the chance.
Or at the least, try a sample. Just don’t be a sample abuser.
