Joe- There's an international market called Freshmart in Forestville, but it seems to be getting smaller in inventory each time I go in. There's also a SuperGrand in Laurel on Rte 197. This is the one I tend to go to for most of my Korean food.

The Durian legend is overblown? HAH! I had one in Singapore and while it was being cut open, a group of Asians gathered around me. I tasted it. It tasted like it smelled, fishy, oniony, and had a sense of New York City garbage sweltering in August.

The circle of Asians all pointed at me and laughed because they knew what my reaction would be. A grabbed a hose from a market stall and now my bravado for tasting new things is gone...

Hi Linda,

Thanks for your comment. You're right, locally raised meat is not so expensive when you consider all the other costs we pay as a result of factory farms. And if people would eat less meat overall, then they'd probably end spending the same amount on meat at the farmers' market as they would have at the supermarket. It does seem to be a positive thing that with all these books and documentaries, more people are aware of the issues now.

After saying "No, it's not", I should have said, "the costs of CHEAP FOOD have just been externalized..."

Anyone who read Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food" at least five years or more ago knows this stuff but it does'nt hurt to get it out there again, As to not doing enough, don't let that stop you. Being overwhelmed is not going to get us anywhere. DO WHAT YOU CAN! Eat less meat, buy if from locals who have an ethic about what they do, and push for change through your gov't , uh, representatives. I know, I know, it's a stretch to think they listen to us and not the guys with bags of cash who trip through the halls of power. But we still have the vote, Make it an informed one. And so locally raised meat is so expensive? No, it is not--the costs have just been externalized and we all are paying for it in countless other ways. I have an idea for a bumper sticker: "Cheap food is unjust food--can you stomach that?"

Just found this review of our restaurant, ...

#1 I agree chili should be spicy, and our house recipe is, and is always the choice I would make. The Philly Chili is for the chili novice who doesn't want the heat. Trust us we compete with our chili we know what we're doing.

#2 We agree the "McRib" sucked and i no longer on the menu, we now make something called the "Rib Tip" which is our BBQ babyback ribs, pulled off the bone and its much better.

I suggest you come back and try us out ... we've made a lot of changes for the better including a bar serving 12 draft lines and 20+ bottled beers.

Hope to see you soon!!

Hillwood is an especially nice place to spend Valentine's Day this year! We are having an opening benefit that night for our exhibition, "The Style that Ruled the Empires: Russia, Napoleon, and 1812," called "Guns and Roses" that will feature a vodka tasting and roses. http://www.hillwoodmuseum.org/events/2012-Guns-and-Roses.pdf
