Say you’re famished and moseying around looking for a sandwich. The deli’s a suitable choice, but you’re in the mood for something more exciting. Subway’s not exciting, but it’s reliable, and they have those Baked Lays near the counter which you can never resist. But, no, even Baked Lays won’t do it today, because you want… well what is it you want, stomach? Something like this?

Yes. That’ll work.

Le Moulin’s grilled salmon with tomato, cucumber, and dill aioli on pumpernickel. Those are big chunks of fresh salmon and I speed-ate that sandwich like Joey Chestnut polishing off a hot dog.

I also poked around the rest of the quaint little cafe. There’s a nice selection of coffees and teas, and the counter along the window makes an ideal spot for sipping and people watching.

Le Moulin’s main business is high-end catering, but in the cafe they serve freshly prepared items along with their gourmet sandwiches and paninis — all of which sounded great by the way; Prosciutto di Parma with tomato and goat cheese? Yes please.

On the way out I picked up a flyer for Le Moulin’s French language and cooking classes. The flyer says, “Please indicate your current level of proficiency in French conversation.” Uh, that’d be zero, unless you count words that pertain to the Tour de France. Maybe I can be like Remy in Ratatouille and cook but not speak.

Black Cat Cafe in Irvington is one of those forward-thinking eateries that puts an emphasis on high-quality local ingredients and social responsibility. The coffee beans are Fair Trade Certified, meaning they’re grown to stringent social and environmental standards and are purchased at a minimum price per pound. The menu ingredients come from local vendors and farmers. Support for both local and international farmers; that’s something you can feel good about.

The space is warm and inviting; the brick walls are dotted with local artwork, and there’s a section of gift items. The comfy menu includes coffee, soups, sandwiches, ice cream, smoothies and desserts. I picked up a chipotle chicken wrap stuffed with fresh avocado and chipotle dressing.

It’s a leisurely kind of cafe, perfect for catching up with friends, reading the paper or breaking out a laptop (there’s free Wi-Fi). And from the website, it looks like they’ve got live music performances on the weekend!

I like what Black Cat’s about: selling quality products and doing some good at the same time. We need more places like this in Westchester.
