It was a great day to be in Washington, D.C. My day kicked off at 7am with the Nation’s Triathlon. Well, technically, it was a duathlon — the strong rains of the past week made for unsafe water conditions and a cancellation of the swim portion of the race. But it was still a great event. Quite an experience to bike and run on closed roads under the shadow of the Washington Monument…. on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11th. Kudos to everyone involved.
Once I got home, I did what I always do after a race: I went in search of comfort food with which to stuff my face. Knew exactly where I was going, too: 2 Amys.
Recently I was talking to someone who knows her food, and she gave me very good information — that 2 Amys, admired for its Neapolitan pizza, also churns out bagels and donuts on the weekends (Sundays only?). She said it had something to do with them getting bored making pizza all the time and wanting to mix things up.
I don’t know if 2 Amys makes different flavors of bagels, but today it was just plain — available either on its own, or with lox, cream cheese and red onions. I got the works.

It’s a unique style of bagel, and I really liked it. Different from a NY bagel — this one was quite dense, chewy and crusty. A very satisfying bagel that formed a nice lox sandwich.
Up front was a tray of the freshly made donuts. I ordered two. Later when I got home I discovered that two donut holes had been thrown into the bag as well.

What a well constructed donut. The textural opposite of the bagel; where that was meaty, this donut was fluffy and light. Simple too, just covered in sugar and cinnamon. I think I may have tasted apple cider in there, which would make sense, since this is very much like the cider donuts you find when you go apple picking.
I still have yet to try 2 Amys pizza, but if the pizza’s as good as the bagels and donuts, I may become a regular. 2 Amys seems to know what it’s doing when it comes to round food objects.
