The thought of $1 per piece sushi elicits two feelings, intrigue and apprehension. Intrigue because hey, only $1 per piece? That’s a great deal! Apprehension because hey, only $1 per piece? Is this sushi going to make me sick??
The offer is all part of Tono Sushi’s daily happy hour special, which also includes $2.75 for small beers and sake. A group of us met there last week, eager to have a taste. I’m happy to report that the $1 per piece sushi did not make me sick.
Actually, Tono’s website is a little misleading. Not all the sushi is $1, only the nigiri (fish on rice). Maki (rolls) are higher priced, a bit disappointing since I’m more of a maki guy.
If I remember correctly, my order included spicy scallop, tofu, purple clam, two kinds of tuna, flounder, yellowtail and salmon. Was it the best sushi I’ve eaten? Nope. Some pieces tasted fresher than others, and the purple clam did not win me over. But overall, pretty decent, helped along by two flasks of cold sake.
Tono’s got competition now, with the newly opened Umi Japanese Cuisine just a few doors down. Judging from Yelp reviews, Umi’s off to a good start. What they don’t have though, is $1 per piece happy hour sushi.
