A Casa D’Italia Sandwich

I’ve peered into Harrison’s Casa D’Italia several times, drawn in by the words “Gelateria”, and each time it’s been closed. I think they’d been renovating for a while.

Finally made it in to try one of their many gourmet sandwiches. (It wasn’t a gelato sort of day. Another time.)

Here’s my Il Romano, with sliced chicken breast, fried zucchini, broccoli rabe, and Bel Paese, an Italian cow’s milk cheese I’d never had before.

You know what surprised me about this sandwich?  It was cold. Doesn’t it seem like it should be toasted and served hot?

(Note: I like my food hot.  Like piping, practically burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth hot.  For instance, while other people eat Chinese take-out straight out of the containers, I’ll pop my plate into the microwave to re-heat it.  Just weird that way, I guess.)

So a cold Il Romano bummed me out a little.  Nothing a little Foreman Grill action couldn’t fix, though.

Ahh, much better.  Now I could appreciate the sandwich, especially the light, creamy Bel Paese and soft broccoli rabe.

And finally, don’t forget rule #1 when eating broccoli rabe, spinach, or any stringy green vegetable: Check yourself in the mirror afterwards. That piece of broccoli rabe you just enjoyed? Yeah, now it’s stuck between your teeth.

This is my favorite deli, there is this guy Mike that works there and is makes the best sandwich, I will wait until he isn’t busy just so he can make my sandwich. You should have told them you wanted your sandwich hot because they have both a panni grill and an oven thingy to make the sandwiches hot.
