The Cow or the Pig?

The question I’ve been pondering all summer ever since my brother-in-law posed it during a moment of reflection: If you could eat from only one animal, would it be a cow or a pig?

It’s a tougher question than it sounds.  I’ve been vacillating like Congress on health care reform.  One moment I’ll eat a burger and it’s: Cow. Gotta be the cow. Then I’ll have a pulled pork sandwich. Pig. Pig all the way.

The answer wasn’t made clear until I started thinking back on my favorite things I ate this summer.  With an honorable mention going to the gelato at Via Vanti! and the Boston brown bread at Spanky’s Clam Shack, the top three were the half clam/half sausage pizza at Frank Pepe, the pork and peas at Umami Cafe and the Cuban sandwich at Bakery at Four Corners.

See what they have in common?

I adore beef, and nothing tops a well-cooked burger, but the variety of uses for pork — we didn’t even talk about ribs or bacon — pushes it to a clear #1 in my mind.  Sorry Wilbur.

That leads me to two questions:

1) What were the best things you ate this summer?

2) You’re stranded on a desert island and can only have one animal. Which would it be — cow or pig?

Why am I posing ridiculous questions that you’ll never be forced to deal with in real life (unless you’re a conch-carrying British schoolboy)?  Beats me.  But it’s fun.
