Stew Leonard’s Lobster Rolls

Ever had a nightmare about being attacked by a giant lobster?   That’s what it would look like.  And the lobster would be named Larry.

It was only fitting to walk into Stew Leonard’s and be greeted by an oversized lobster; I’d come for a lobster roll… well, two lobster rolls, to be exact.

My parents used to take us to Stew Leonard’s when we were kids — two memories stick out clearly in my mind: singing cows and a labyrinthian layout.

Like the Chocolate World tour at Hershey Park, some things never change.  There are still singing cows at Stew Leonard’s — or in this case, a family of singing cows, which were quiet at this particular moment.

“Why aren’t they singing?”, a little kid asked his dad.

“I think they’re on a break,” he answered.

And the store’s still labyrinthian, a genius marketing ploy that leads customers past almost every product in the store in a hope that they’ll impulse buy.

No easy feat for a defenseless eater to walk by breads, produce and desserts without taking a peek, but I put on my Mine That Bird blinders and strode with purpose toward the seafood section, until I came upon what I was looking for:

Two lobster rolls for $9.98.  Yeah!

Fresh chunks of tender claw and knuckle meat in hot dog buns with little filler and the right amount of mayonnaise.  And all for under $10?  The value conscious consumer in me was thrilled.

I’m headed to Cape Cod this weekend to hang with the family — eating these lobster rolls jump started me into a summer, beachy mood.  Seafood will definitely be eaten this weekend, and very likely, more lobster rolls.  But at Cape prices?  I guarantee they’ll cost more than $9.98.
