There’s a whole lot of kvetching going on right now about the weather, and rightfully so — it is awfully cold out there. Okay, winter has its cons (I’m itching to start cycling outdoors), but let’s look at the pros: great sleeping, giant mounds of blankets, the peaceful quiet of snowfall, hot chocolate, crackling fireplaces (I don’t have one, but I can dream), snowshoeing, hearty soups and stews, women wearing adorable hats… I could go on and on. If you can’t tell, I love winter.
Still not convinced? Then how about this: If you like coffeehouses, isn’t this the best time of year? Think about it — it’s 20 degrees outside, you’re shivering, and you step into a toasty, inviting environment with the aroma of hazelnut in the air and soft music playing. A neighborhood coffeehouse in winter is like a big, enveloping hug.
In Rye I’m forced to go to Starbucks because that’s all we’ve got, but Dragonfly Cafe in Pleasantville… Dragonfly’s a COFFEEHOUSE.
Look at all those paper lanterns on the ceiling and the wall of coffee beans on the left. Little knickknacks and interesting food items are everywhere. The chairs are comfy. There’s free WiFi. Music’s present but it’s low enough not to be intrusive. The ladies working the counter are cheery and exceptionally friendly, giving you samples of coffee to taste and making you feel welcome in their charming cafe.
I flip open my laptop and settle in with a lemon pistachio biscotti and 16 oz of “Jamaican Me Crazy” coffee.
Yeah, I’m okay with winter.
