Not Your Everyday Lunch at Blue Water Grill

My concept of “lunch” during the work week goes something like this: step outside for a bit of fresh air, heat up leftovers in the microwave, eat quickly and get back to work.  I forget sometimes that other people do things differently.

Recession?  What recession?  That’s Union Square’s Blue Water Grill at lunchtime.  As you can see, there’s no Tupperware or microwave to be found, just lots of well dressed people sitting, eating and (gasp) having a drink!  So this is how the other half lives.

My co-workers and I were at Blue Water Grill for a work function. The space is gorgeous — an old converted bank with high ceilings that’s both spacious and intimate.  Our balcony table had a dazzling view.

As you probably guessed from the name, Blue Water Grill specializes in all things seafood.  This was way more food than I normally eat for lunch, but what was I gonna do, turn it down? You set it in front of me, I will eat it.

We started with rock shrimp lettuce wraps.

Then a platter of oysters.  Oysters are not normally my favorite (flavor: good, consistency: ehh), but these were terrifically fresh and briny.

One co-worker ordered the lobster sandwich.

The rest of us did the prix-fixe meal: soup, entree and dessert.

Very cool presentation of the blue crab chowder; the server brought out bowls with small mounds of blue crab in the center. That’s it?  Where’s the chowder?  Not to worry, it was as Sally would say, “on the side”.  The server poured the liquid around the mound of crab, and voila, there was our creamy bowl of chowder.

My entree of chilean sea bass in a balsamic reduction was fall-apart tender.

Sean’s tilapia looked good too.

Dessert was heavenly — a walnut tarte with concord grape sorbet.

I can safely say it was the best lunch I’ve had in a long time. Outstanding meal from beginning to end. Sure beats re-heated leftovers.
