Yeah, I've definitely heard mixed things about Pepe's, but I feel like I need to try that clam pie just to say I've had it. There's a Pepe's opening up in NY shortly, so I'll have to see what the fuss is all about.

likewise glad to see BAR getting some love. have to disagree somewhat with dan f. though... i can't comment on modern and sally's as i haven't been, but the two times i've been to pepe's (once to try it and one more time to confirm that the first time was how it is) have been not impressive in the least. BAR's pizza was just much better. even pepe's clam pie was a disappointment...

but hey, in the end, none of these are new york pizza...so who cares! :)

Hey Doug,
Loved your post--glad to see BAR is getting some of the recognition it deserves. WIth the smokey bacon and creamy potatoes, their signature pie is killer. I'd have to disagree with ranking it #1 in New Haven though. Modern and Sally's, and then probably Pepe's, top BAR in my book. There are also a couple great places that are little-known (Zuppardi's and Roseland, both outside of New Haven).

Thanks for the great stuff, and I'll try to check back sometime.
