Black Cat Cafe in Irvington is one of those forward-thinking eateries that puts an emphasis on high-quality local ingredients and social responsibility. The coffee beans are Fair Trade Certified, meaning they’re grown to stringent social and environmental standards and are purchased at a minimum price per pound. The menu ingredients come from local vendors and farmers. Support for both local and international farmers; that’s something you can feel good about.
The space is warm and inviting; the brick walls are dotted with local artwork, and there’s a section of gift items. The comfy menu includes coffee, soups, sandwiches, ice cream, smoothies and desserts. I picked up a chipotle chicken wrap stuffed with fresh avocado and chipotle dressing.
It’s a leisurely kind of cafe, perfect for catching up with friends, reading the paper or breaking out a laptop (there’s free Wi-Fi). And from the website, it looks like they’ve got live music performances on the weekend!
I like what Black Cat’s about: selling quality products and doing some good at the same time. We need more places like this in Westchester.
