On the 8th Day, God Created Bacon Salt

File this under the “I can’t believe I didn’t think of this because I could be a millionaire right now” category. Here’s the story: Two regular guys working at a technology company loved bacon so much that they created a seasoning salt that tastes like bacon. Let’s review: Salt?  Good.  Bacon?  Good.  Bacon + salt?  Brilliant!!  (I’m racking my brain to come up with my own next big thing — all I’ve got so far is “Pork Rib Paprika” — anyone want to finance it?  Anyone?  Bueller?)

Bacon Salt comes in three flavors: Original, Hickory and Peppered; I bought a container of the Hickory and tested it out on roasted asparagus and broiled rosemary chicken.

So does it really taste like bacon?

I’m not sure.  If you blindfolded me and didn’t tell me what I was trying, I don’t know that “bacon” would be the first word that comes to mind.  But ooh, it’s pretty darn tasty.   Smoky, sweet and granular like sea salt, I found myself sprinkling some on the plate and dipping the asparagus into it.

I’m not finished with the taste test.  I’ve got to try Bacon Salt on a few more foods (especially eggs), but I’m thinking this stuff will kick-start almost any dish.  These technology guys are on to something.

** An update to this post.  I’ve now tried Bacon Salt on corn, turkey burgers, eggs, chili and quesadillas.  It’s so addictive and really does taste like bacon!  Also has significantly less sodium than table salt, so you can use it without feeling guilty.

I heard an interview with the company founders. Turns out that it’s incredibly popular with observant Jews. On top of being no cal — it’s kosher!

My dad’s friend makes this stuff called Buck’s Seasoning: http://www.bucksseasoning.com/. It’s awesome plus they’re great people so it makes me like the product more. I put it on everything: corn on the cob, veggies, steak, egg whites. I have a crapload of it in my freezer; I’ll give you some to try if you promise to cook me dinner with it :)
